NaPoWriMo 2021: Day 17

Prompt: write a poem that is about, or that involves, the moon.

the image of the moon
we view in the sky
is a glamorized construction
perpetuated by
the agents and artists
working hard behind the scenes
to ensure “real world” sightings
and the cameos on screens
are perfectly lit
and shapely and bright
at a distance that captures
it all just right
for once when the moon
was not quite so well-known
it made the mistake
of venturing alone
on a dark and clear night
amid the wide sea of stars
unkempt and so homely
that even neighboring Mars
was shocked at the sight
and bid it run, hide
lest by unwelcome lenses
it be captured, or spied
by the lustful gaze
of some small, watching humans
who would judge its marred face
or critique its lumens
and so, to this day
the moon that we see
remains haunted, imprisoned
by its own celebrity
