NaPoWriMo: Day 2

Prompt: write a poem about a specific place.

It looks like
The poorest parts
of a Florida metropolis
To which you’ve never been

Bright colored buildings
Palm trees
Heat

The humidity permeates
And sticks to your skin

As you drive past
Faded storefronts
With damaged signs

Makeshift shelters covered by
Printed tarpaulin
Words you don’t recognize
Some that you do

Motorbikes with sidecars
The smell of exhaust
Travel is slow through the traffic

Street markets, shopping malls
Covered basketball courts
A sense of community abounds

It’s a world altogether foreign
But not unfamiliar
And the memory makes your heart long

For home
